Google Pilots AdSense To Video

A closed pilot program for video ads on AdSense will launch this week; it's a limited test that give online video publishers control of the ad displays.

Online video, we hear, is the latest and greatest thing since Bob Metcalfe invented Ethernet. It's reaching a point where the norm is to find a three to five minute video on sites that used to be able to deliver the same content in text, which could be read in under a minute.

I know what you're thinking. "David, you are a fossil. Online writers are a dying breed, and you should be pleased to feel the crush of evolution at your throat." Fine. Think that way. I'll be waiting for evolution with a smile and half of Cold Steel's inventory.

The people have voted with their browsing habits, however, and video has been a big winner.

Google announces several developments

Change happens at breakneck speed in the internet world and Google's recent updates are the latest in a long line that include its introduction of universal search last week.

Firstly, it has introduced a new security blog, aimed at educating users on trends and findings relating to the hot topic of online security.

The inaugural post relates to malware, which it describes as surreptitious software capable of stealing sensitive information from your computer.

Noting that such software is increasingly spreading, it highlights those countries with high levels of malware distribution servers.

Secondly, Google will now stop taking internet advertisements from companies that offer essay writing services that help university students cheat.

Google AdWords Getting Bolder

We spotted a new Google AdWords phenomenon yesterday - as you know, Google “bolds" words in ad text that match the keywords you're bidding on. The example below shows that synonyms of keywords are now appearing in boldface.

We've confirmed with Google that this is a new “feature," and it also works with antonyms. So, for example, if the keyword is “GM," and the words “General Motors" are included in the ad, then “General Motors" will appear in boldface.

I'll leave it to enterpriseing readers to figure out how to use this gem to make all of an ad's words appear in bold!

Google Outbids Microsoft for Dow Jones

In what is perhaps the most astonishing bidding war in corporate history, Google today offered $10 billion for Dow Jones & Company, topping a $7.5 billion bid from Microsoft and earlier bids from Virgin and News Corp.Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in a brief statement that the acquisition was part of Google's larger mission "to organize the world's information." The company plans to make all of Dow Jones output available for free on the web, with revenue to be derived from advertising through Google's AdSense and other ad programs including DoubleClick. The Google offer is at a startling premium to past estimates of Dow Jones' value, but analysts predict Google can make it work. "Everything these guys touch turns to gold," noted Merrill Lynch analyst Jessica Reif Cohen. No one at Dow Jones could be reached for comment, but reports of a champagne shortage in France have been attributed to heavy buying from the Bancroft family, which controls the company.Earlier stories on the bidding can be seen at:Microsoft Joins Bidding War for Dow Jones and Virgin Outbids News Corp.
