TV networks still groping for a Web strategy

It's easy to think of the big television networks as the kings of the media castle. After all, CBS and NBC and Fox are giant entertainment conglomerates that pump out billions of dollars worth of "content" every year, and control (or at least act like they control) millions of eyeballs. .

Google Updates AdWords Landing Page Quality Score

Last night Google informed me that they have made a "minor" update to the landing page quality score factor. I was told that only a small number of AdWords advertisers will notice an increase in their minimum bids.

Google is stressing to me that a "vast majority of advertisers" will not be affected by this change.

So I decided to see what the advertisers had to say. Since this update happened last night, I did not expect all that much conversation a few hours later. But currently I found two threads.

One thread is at DigitalPoint Forums and the other is at WebmasterWorld. Here are some select quotes from those threads:

Today I got many of my best keywords in different campaigns go from Great to Poor (with $10 bids!!!!). So I've had a campaign running for keyword and I happen to have keyword.org as the domain.

Google Braces for Landmark Adwords Keyword Search Program Jury Trial

Chicago, Illinois - (Website Hosting Directory) - May 16, 2007 - Search engine, Google, will defend a critical federal trademark jury trial lawsuit, in connection with its Adwords Keyword Search Program, set for jury selection on November 9, 2007. The historic trademark infringement lawsuit, brought on behalf of American Blind and Wallpaper Factory, Inc. (ABWF), will focus on ABWF's contention that Google violates trademark laws by allowing competitors of ABWF to buy advertisements, tied to keyword web searches, using ABWF's trademarks. In an April 18, 2007 decision denying Google's motion to dismiss the case, the court wrote that ''the evidence suggests that Google used [ABWF's] mark with the intent to maximize its own profit ... [and] ABWF has produced sufficient evidence of likelihood of [consumer] confusion [to allow the case to be decided by a jury].'' The closely watched case could have a significant impact on Google.

Google-eBay Spat Shows Need for Competition

Auction site eBay has pulled out of Google AdWords as the frienemies are close to no longer being on speaking terms. The refusal of one multi-service organization to do business with another proves the upside of mega companies such as Google, Microsoft, etc. If Google offers everything from ads to search to video, then their competitors will have little choice but to team up with other companies (or buy their own), such as eBay needing a viable search marketing partner. Strong competition is healthy for the industry, and only by competitors growing in size can they keep each other in check. Independent companies can continue to work with the "best of breed" parts of these organizations.
